A hands-on guide for search engine optimization.

The future of SEO is not link building. The future of SEO is a great user experience.” by Neil Patel.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization which means writing content in such a way that the Google search engine should recognize what exactly the content is about. Then accordingly google displays results if a user searches for something related to that piece of content.

Let me elaborate with an example. Suppose you are searching for the best hair dryer. Many people might’ve written on this topic. Their blog may include words like hair dryer, best hair dryer, etc.

The content which includes words related to the topic you are searching will be displayed in the top 10 searches.

When you search for something on Google, Google’s search engine crawls through the content written on that particular topic. If the search engine finds the matching words according to the search, it displays that content to the viewer.

The words that match the search are known as SEO keywords which we’ll discuss later.

I hope it’s clear about what search engine optimization is!!

Why is search engine optimization necessary for your business?

Search engine optimization is necessary for your business as it helps drive organic traffic to your website. Suppose you are an English teacher. If people search on Google: “The best teacher near me.” or “The best English teacher.” or “English teacher.” If the search doesn’t show your website no one will notice you. Then what’s the point of having a website?

Let’s look at another example:

Suppose you have a restaurant, and got your website designed, but didn’t include words like, “Restaurants in Pune.”, “Best restaurants in Pune.”, “Best restaurant food in Pune.”, etc. on your website.

On the other hand, your competitors’ website has all the relevant keywords in his website.

Now, when a person searches for the “Best restaurant in Pune”, according to you which website would be displayed in the first 10 searches?

The second one, right!!

Google promotes content that is relevant to the words people are searching for.

Does that mean you add SEO keywords anywhere and everywhere in the content?

The answer is NO!!

According to a recent update from Google, authentic and genuine content will be promoted in Google searches.

The content with unnecessary stuffing of keywords will not be promoted.

So use SEO keywords optimally and wisely in your content to maintain the flow of content.

Improve the search engine optimization of your website. Here’s how?

  1. Meta description

It is said that meta description doesn’t matter for on-page SEO. But it isn’t reality. Meta description matters for optimization so write it smartly.

Title tags are important for optimizing the content. Use different title tags from h1 to h6.

  1. Visuals optimization

Images that you use matter for on-page SEO. So use visuals if they’re in the sink with the content.

  • Off-page SEO

Off-page SEO is used to improve your website ranking without investing money. Off-page SEO is done without making any changes to the on-page.

The 3 factors for off-page SEO are as follows:

  1. Backlinks

The links from other websites linked to our website are backlinks. Backlinks increase your off-page SEO by bringing traffic from other websites relevant to your business.

  1. Content Marketing

Writing good content is for on-page SEO but marketing it through different platforms is an off-page SEO that increases the traffic. Use social media, quora, forums, etc. to drive traffic on your site.

  1. Local SEO

Increase awareness in your local area to increase your off-page traffic.

  • Enhance user experience to improve your SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

User experience matters the most. Ensure a pleasing experience for your viewers by ensuring the following things are to the point.

  • Content
  • Visuals
  • UI/UX of the website
  • Loading the website instantly

  • Have a Google My Business account to rank through SEO.

Google My Business means having a Google account for your business. Local businesses must have an account. It helps display the information about them in a particular area if someone searches for them. It is important for SEO as it increases the online visibility of that business.

  • Analyse your performance

After ensuring the above things are perfect, analyse how your content performs after 3 months to get genuine feedback. The content that’s performing better, analyse why it is working better.

For the content that isn’t working better, analyse what is missing. Write your answers and plan accordingly for next time.

Search engine optimization is a long game. Don’t expect results as soon as you post a piece of content. As it’ll not happen. So set logical expectations and work accordingly.
